On this date in 1878, 24 year old John Henry Tunstall, an English-born rancher, was shot and killed in Lincoln County, NM. Tunstall’s men, including a young upstart who came to be known as Billy the Kid, vowed revenge. And thus began New Mexico’s Lincoln County War.

Cool to know the history of that. A lot of pop culture makes it appear as if Billy The Kid just popped out of nowhere. Now we know the truth!

Most movies portray Tunstall as a kindly old man. The real Tunstall wasn’t much older than Billy.And he was a tough businessman to boot.
