riffing the pandemic

Rifftrax Live Stranger Things

I’m sure I’ve mentioned that I’m a big fan of Rifftrax Live. Well, this whole lockdown/antisocial distancing thing has thrown a monkey wrench into this year’s scheduled shows. Hopefully we’ll get to see those later in the year. They had two lined up: Hobgoblins (a cheesy Gremlins ripoff) and Amityville: The Evil Escapes. Looking forward to those.

In the meantime, the Rifftrax guys have set up a virtual live show that’s scheduled for tonight. They’ll be riffing the first episode of the Netflix series Stranger Things. To watch, you’ll need a Netflix account, a chrome browser and an extension for an app called Scener. You can get all the details here.

New entertainment is hard to come by right now, so I’m not going to miss this opportunity for a few laughs.

Rifftrax Live – 2020

Rifftrax Live

Last week, the fine folks at Rifftrax announced their live show schedule for 2020. They’ll be riffing Hobgoblins on June11, and Amityville 4: The Evil Escapes (1989) on October 21. There’s a Kickstarter campaign to raise money for the shows. Click here if you’re interested in donating.

The guys riffed Hobgoblins (1988) back in their MST3K days. It’s a very riff-able movie. And I’m sure they’ll have all new material this year. Here’s the original trailer for the movie:

I haven’t seen Amityville 4. Apparently is was a made-for-TV movie that aired on NBC in May 1989. I was in the Army stationed in Germany at the time, so I guess that’s why I wasn’t familiar with it. Here’s the trailer:

I don’t get out much these days, but I’m gonna see both of these shows live.

rifftrax – 10th anniversary

As my regular readers know, I am a huge Rifftrax fan. This month marks the 10th anniversary of the movie-riffing comedy troupe. To celebrate, the fine folks at RT have put together a highlight reel. Here it is. Enjoy.

The next Rifftrax Live show is scheduled for August 18. The boys will be riffing the Japanese monster classic Mothra. I’m planning to attend, and this time I’ll be dragging my brother along for his first Rifftrax Live show. Should be epic.

Rifftrax Mothra

rifftrax live – the room

Finally, after five long months, it’s time for another Rifftrax Live event. Tonight, the boys will be riffing The Room, which has been called “the Citizen Kane of bad movies.” I’ll be there to see it, just as I have for the previous six live events. There’s an encore showing next week, if you want to go but can’t make it tonight. I can’t recommend these show too much. I’ve had a great time at every one I’ve been to. Here’s the trailer for tonight’s show.

rifftrax live – 2015

The fine folks at Rifftrax have set up a Kickstarter to raise money for four live shows in 2015. They wound up hitting their $75,000 goal in less than 24 hours. Now they’re working toward their stretch goal of $250k. They’re past the halfway point with 24 days to go. Among the movies they plan to riff is Sharknado 2. I’m hoping that if they hit the 250k-mark, they’ll give us a fifth movie, like they did in 2014 (Anaconda, it was awesome!).

If you’re still not clear on what this whole movie riffing thing is all about, here’s a sample of one of Rifftrax’s latest efforts, for sale on their website. It’s a riff on a piece of 80s sci-fi cheese called Alien Outlaw. One of the stars is B-movie cowboy Lash La Rue.

rifftrax live – santa claus

A week from this Thursday — that’s December 4th, for the calendar-challenged — it’ll be time for another Rifftrax Live event. This time they’ll be riffing on that 1959 holiday classic, Santa Claus. This will be my sixth Rifftrax event. I just love these things. If you’re looking for a break from the hectic holiday shopping thing, you ought to consider going. Everyone should be out of their Thanksgiving turkey-comas by then.

rifftrax live – anaconda

Thursday’s the night. The boys from Rifftrax will be giving Anaconda a good riffing. If you’re planning to go, you might want to grab your tickets now, before they’re all gone. I picked mine up last week. No sense taking any chances. Here’s the trailer, if you’re interested.

If you’re still not sure what this whole riffing thing’s about, here’s a smaple of the boys giving the treatment to “It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown.”

rifftrax live – godzilla

Tomorrow night at 8 PM, in theaters across the nation, it’ll be time for Rifftrax Live – Godzilla. The boys will be riffing on the 1998 version, you know, the one with Matthew Broderick. The one where Ferris Bueller finally realizes that he’d rather be in gym class. Here’s the trailer for the event.

Now I’ve seen this movie at least once, maybe twice. I even (for some unknown reason) have it on DVD. But the only thing I really remember about this movie is the Taco Bell commercial they did for a cross-promotion. Anyone else remember this?
