this day in crime history: june 29, 1978

On this date in 1978, actor Bob Crane (Hogan’s Heroes) was found murdered in a hotel room in Scottsdale, AZ. His head had been bashed in and a VCR cord was tied around his neck. Cause of death was blunt force trauma to the head. Police suspected Crane’s friend John Carpenter (no relation to the film director). He was finally arrested and tried for Crane’s murder in 1992. The jury found him not guilty. He died of a heart attack in 1998, so whatever secrets Carpenter knew about the murder went to the grave with him.

  1. I have been up all morning reading posts and catching up for not being online yesterday. Now, all of a sudden when I hit the Like button it won’t stay blue – I want you to know I’ve been here, despite wordpress’ antics!!
I was shook up when Crane died. He was not only a good actor, but his death was under identical circumstances as George Reeves – it felt eerie.

  2. John D.:
When you watch Crane’s performance on Hogan’s Heroes, you find it hard to believe he was killed too early in life.
GP makes a good point. He and Reeves gone too soon.

    Sad story – good actor.

    Roll safe out there.
