On this day in 1984, singer Marvin Gaye was shot and killed by his father after an ongoing domestic dispute turned violent. Marvin Gaye, Sr. pleaded no contest to voluntary manslaughter. He was given a six year suspended sentence and five years probation. He died of pneumonia in 1998.

    I keep forgetting it was April 1…

    I usually think of more funny things going on.
    Marvin getting killed was just plain awful.
    His dad got off TOO light (IMHO).

  2. In an episode of MST3K, Tom and Crow want to get married and take a questionnaire to determine their compatibility. One of the questions is “who do you consider a better father; Bill Cosby or Marvin Gaye Sr?” I didn’t get the joke until I read today’s entry. On the other hand, considering the various accusations that have cone out about Cosby, perhaps the answer isn’t so obvious as it was back in the 1990s.
